Community Crime Prevention

Community Crime Prevention

This section provides information on the new four year Community Crime Prevention Program, as well as safety advice for senior Victorians, women and multicultural communities.

Action on community safety and crime prevention are high priorities for the Victorian Government.

Alongside law enforcement and criminal justice, the implementation of crime prevention initiatives can reduce the risks of crimes occurring, increase community safety and improve perceptions of crime and safety.

A new Community Crime Prevention Program has been established to engage, support and build local community capacity to address local crime and safety issues.

A common assumption about crime prevention is that it is solely the responsibility of police and the justice system. In reality, crime prevention requires shared responsibility between government and the community to achieve positive outcomes.

Local communities can actively contribute to crime prevention through identifying local crime problems, providing potential solutions and promoting local involvement for action.

The Community Crime Prevention Program consists of:

  • Public Safety Infrastructure Grants

This includes grants of up to $250,000 for councils to develop public safety infrastructure such as alarm systems, lighting systems and CCTV systems.
