Sheriff's Officer Profile

What is a Sheriff's Officer?

Sheriff's Officers are officers of the Supreme Court who are responsible for actioning warrants and orders issued by all Victorian courts. Sheriff's Officers enforce sanctions against people who do not comply with court orders. Sanctions can include the seizure and sale of assets, licence or vehicle registration suspension or arrest.

Sheriff's Officers also action civil warrants on behalf of a plaintiff against a defendant when a court order has been made. Sheriff's Officers have legislative authority to demand payment of outstanding debts. If payment is not made or payment arrangements entered into after a certain period are not made, they can seize property or arrest members of the public.

Sheriff's Officers need to have exceptional negotiation and problem-solving skills. They are required to exercise tact, discretion and sound judgement in the actioning of warrants. Sheriff's Officers need to take into account cultural and religious diversity in their everyday work.
