Message from the Sheriff

As part of the Department of Justice, the Victorian Sheriff’s Office plays a critical role in law enforcement through the actioning of warrants, issued by Victorian and federal courts, to provide effective and visible sanctions against those who do not comply with court orders.

Warrants enforced by Sheriff’s Officers include warrants for civil matters (arising from orders made by a court following civil disputes) and warrants arising from unpaid infringements.

Sheriff’s Officers have legislative authority to demand payment of outstanding debts. If payment is not made or payment arrangements entered into after a certain period are not made, there are a number of sanctions that may be authorised by a warrant, from seizing property to arresting debtors or defendants.

This makes for a challenging and rewarding work environment for the 190 Victorian Sheriff's Officers stationed throughout the state across eight regions.

Sheriff’s Officers are uniformed officers who are mobile and work in the community. Sheriff's Officers work as part of a team and in partnership with other authorities such as Victoria Police, the Environment Protection Authority, the Victorian Taxi Directorate and VicRoads.

The Sheriff's Office is looking for people with a wide range of communication and life skills who are keen to be involved in Victoria's justice system as Sheriff's Officers.

The ability to exercise tact, discretion and sound judgment in the actioning of warrants and to take into account cultural and religious diversity, plays a large part in their everyday work.

I look forward to your application and wish you every success.

Sheriff of Victoria.
