Ararat Prison becomes Hopkins Correctional Centre

Ararat Prison will soon become the Hopkins Correctional Centre in recognition of the major contribution made to its operation by the local community.

Corrections Minister, Andrew McIntosh said the opportunity had been taken to re-name the prison as part of the project to add 350 beds to the complex.

The Hopkins River is a landmark of local significance to the region, flowing from Ararat through the south-west to Bass Strait at Warrnambool.

The new name was put forward by members of the Ararat Correctional Precinct Development Community Advisory Group.

"It also confirms the role the prison will continue to have in supporting local jobs and businesses," Mr McIntosh said.

The support has been crucial in allowing Corrections Victoria to grow into its position as one of the largest employers in the region.

Corrections Victoria employs more than 160 full-time staff at Hopkins Correctional Centre, with even more contract and support staff employed in temporary roles.

The redevelopment is due to be completed in December 2012. Once open, the expansion will create an additional 150 jobs in the region.

The first stage of the project – a 40-bed transitional facility, has already contributed significantly to the region through increased employment, business and trade
