Australia’s First Campaign on Online Gambling Dangers
Australia's first advertising campaign warning of the risks and consequences of excessive online gambling has been launched.
Minister for Gaming, Michael O'Brien said it was the first action of its type taken by a government in Australia to address the risks accompanying the rise of interactive gambling technologies.
The campaign, timed to launch with the AFL football finals and the Spring Racing Carnival, includes television, press, online, radio, train and tram advertising to convey the message – “Online gambling. It's easy to bet, too easy to lose.”
"New technology such as tablet computers, interactive television and smart phones means that it is easier than ever for Victorians to gamble from any location at any time," Mr O'Brien said.
"This easy accessibility, while convenient for some, poses real risks to others of increased problem gambling."
The campaign shows how money, careers and relationships can be jeopardised from excessive online gambling.
The Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Centre runs:
- Gambler's Help Line – a free and confidential counselling service available over the phone, 24 hours a day, by calling 1800 858 858.
- Gambling Help Online - offers online services, including anonymous live chat and email support.
