Bushfire Affected Communities Receive Ongoing Support
The Victorian Government has revealed details of its new joint bushfires initiative with the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal, including a grants program aimed at strengthening leadership in bushfire-affected communities.
Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu said not-for-profit community groups in bushfire-affected areas could apply for grants of up to $30,000 to help deliver important local bushfire recovery projects.
The Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal would source an additional $1 million from community donors so that a total of $1.75 million in grants would be available for community leadership programs, mentoring and practical support.
The government also announced the introduction of the new Fire Recovery Unit, which will start from 1 July to provide ongoing support for bushfire-affected communities, as part of the transition from the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority on 30 June.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Bushfire Response, Peter Ryan, said the new Fire Recovery Unit would be a dedicated unit within government and a central contact point to oversee state-wide bushfire recovery efforts.
Mr Ryan said the free Rebuilding Advisory Service had also been extended as households still needed ongoing support to rebuild their homes.
