Christmas Shopping Checklist

With Christmas fast approaching, Consumer Affairs Victoria is reminding people to do their research before hitting the shops, either in person or online.

Every year after Christmas, Consumer Affairs Victoria observes an increase in enquiries and complaints about purchases. They are mostly for refunds, receiving a faulty product as a gift or issues with gift vouchers.

Shoppers are legally entitled to a refund, exchange or repair if:

  • a product is faulty
  • does not operate properly
  • does not match the description or sample shown
  • does not last for a reasonable time.

Tips for shopping this Christmas:

  • shop around and compare prices at other stores
  • bear in mind that interest free deals are not cost free and can include ongoing fees
  • use gift vouchers before the expiry date as stores do not have to honour them once the expiry date has passed
  • check the returns policy before making a purchase, does the store allow a change of mind?
  • keep purchase receipts in a safe place for refund and warranty purposes (Under the Australian Consumer Law, a trader must issue a receipt for a purchase of $75 or more, however it is up to the customer to request for one if the amount is less)
  • when buying online, only use respected sellers and websites to avoid being scammed
  • check the toys purchased are suitable and safe for the child’s age
  • ensure internet security is in placed when shopping online or on a phone.

If you are experiencing problems with a purchase, you should speak to the trader in the first instance. If you are unsatisfied with the response, you can contact Consumer Affairs Victoria for advice on 1300 55 81 81 or visit the Shopping and trading section of their website.
