Dob in a Dodgy Car Dealer
Consumers now have the power to report dodgy car dealers with the launch of a new phone hotline dedicated to taking calls about unlicensed motor car traders suspected of breaking the law.
Under the Motor Car Traders Act 1986, a person who carries on the business of trading in motor cars must have a licence. Anyone who offers to buy, sell or exchange four or more cars in 12 months is classified as a motor car trader.
So far this year, Consumer Affairs Victoria has received around 20 reports about possible unlicensed motor car traders.
Consumer Affairs Minister Michael O’Brien said the new hotline will ensure more consumers are protected from the risks posed by unlicensed dealers.
“Anyone carrying on the business of trading in motor cars whether that be on the road or online without a licence is breaking the law,” Mr O’Brien said.
“This new hotline will allow anyone to call up free of charge and report any motor car trader that they suspect may be operating without a licence.
‘The information will be used by Consumer Affairs Victoria to identify suspected unlicensed motor car traders for further investigation,” Mr O’Brien said.
Since July 2009 Consumer Affairs Victoria has successfully prosecuted 14 unlicensed motor car traders and instigated civil action against another 5 people for conducting business as a motor car trader without a licence.
Consumer Affairs Victoria has undertaken around 22 proactive investigations of unlicensed motor car traders so far this year.
To report a suspected unlicensed motor car trader call 1800 351 591 or visit the Consumer Affairs Victoria website.
