FireReady Apps nominated for Federal Government Award

The FireReady smartphone application suite has been short-listed as a finalist in the 2011 Excellence in eGovernment Awards.

The app suite was developed by the Department of Justice in response to the Black Saturday disaster, which claimed the lives of 173 people.

The full suite of apps, which are compatible with iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android devices, have exceeded more than 18,800 downloads.

They provide Victorians with another way to access potentially lifesaving bush fire information and enable those living in high-risk areas or those who find themselves in harm’s way to have the latest information, warnings, advice and resources at their fingertips.

FireReady enables people to forward crucial information and alerts to friends or relatives who live in high-risk areas.

Users can complete a five–minute assessment to gauge their level of fire readiness and deliver the latest real–time emergency information and fire safety advice from the CFA, including:

  • warnings and updates
  • the location of any fires plotted on Google Maps
  • Fire Danger ratings from the Bureau of Meteorology.

The Excellence in eGovernment awards were introduced in 2006 by the Australian Government to recognise and promote excellence, innovation and professionalism in the use of Information and Communications Technology.

The winning projects will be announced at an award ceremony on Wednesday 1 June 2011.
