Giving Voice to Homeless Young People

Beyond Appearances: Effective Communication with Homeless Young People is a new DVD promoting positive communication between at-risk and homeless young people, police and other authorities.

The scenario-based film aims to ensure young people in crisis feel supported and understood by those in positions of authority. It is a collaboration between Victoria Police, Youthlaw Community Legal Centre and Melbourne inter-agency support service Frontyard Youth Services.

"We know a large number of homeless or at-risk young people become victims of crime and yet never report those crimes to police," Minister for Crime Prevention, Andrew McIntosh said.

"By highlighting their views and concerns through educational tools such as this, authorities can become better equipped to work with homeless young people and break down barriers to communication."

Funded by the City of Melbourne and produced with the assistance of young people, the DVD will be used by police, social workers, Centrelink staff and youth services to help achieve better and more positive engagement.

The idea came about after Victoria Police approached Frontyard Youth Services to discuss ways to better relate to and understand young people who are at-risk or on the street.

"Their feedback suggests if adults in positions of authority, particularly those in front line and operational roles, were more understanding then young people would be more trusting when interacting with them. It is hoped by promoting more positive relationships, homeless young people will be empowered to report incidents of violence and victimisation,” Mr McIntosh said.

"By facilitating this DVD, Youthlaw and Frontyard Youth Services have given at-risk and disadvantaged youth a voice to ensure they feel supported and understood by those in positions of authority"
