Learn to be a Landlord

Are you a landlord or perhaps considering becoming one? Find out your rights and responsibilities under the Residential Tenancies Act 1997 at an information session near you.

Consumer Affairs Victoria is hosting presentations for landlords at three different locations across the Eastern Metropolitan Region. At the sessions, landlords will receive tips on renting, advice on how to avoid problems and a clear understanding of their legal obligations as well as tenants’ responsibilities in residential tenancy.

Topics will include:

Starting the tenancy:

  • tenancy agreement
  • bond lodgement
  • condition report

During the tenancy:

  • urgent and non-urgent repairs
  • duties landlords and tenants
  • privacy

Ending the tenancy:

  • how to do it the right way
  • bond claim

Changes to the Residential Tenancy Act 1997 that came into effect on 1 September mean that when prospective tenants apply to rent a property, the landlord or real estate agent must state on the application form that they subscribe to a tenancy database and provide the database manager’s contact details.

In addition, the maximum amount a landlord or property owner will have to reimburse a tenant who pays for urgent repairs, has increased from $1,000 to $1,800 (including GST).
