New Online Tool Explains Bushfire Survival Options

A new website has been launched to explain the range of bushfire survival options available to Victorians, as the summer fire season heats up.

‘Your Bushfire Survival Options’ is an online tool which sets out bushfire safety and survival options through video podcasts, illustrations, interactive graphics and links to CFA, MFB and the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE).

Fire Services Commissioner, Craig Lapsley said as we are heading into a hot and dry February, Victorians need to be prepared for the threat of fast-running grassfires.

“The fire agencies provide a suite of online bushfire survival planning and education tools which give Victorians 24-7 access to bushfire safety information to help people understand their risks and encourage them to plan,” he said.

The online tool is a quick reference guide summarising the most important factors for people to consider, when making decisions about their safety – with a focus on leaving early and being well prepared as key survival options.

“This is about helping people understand the realities of the bushfire survival options available in their communities and where these options fit in their personal bushfire survival plan,” Mr Lapsley said.

‘Your Bushfire Survival Options’ brings together key information from the CFA and fire services, including information on:

  • fire locations and bushfire risk
  • the triggers to act
  • a range of shelter options, such as a well-prepared home, Neighbourhood Safer Places, Community Fire Refuges and Private Bushfire Shelters (bunkers).

“Bushfire survival is about shared responsibility and having a bushfire survival plan, and revising and practising it is the best way to know your trigger to act and what you need to do in the event of a fire,” Mr Lapsley said.
