New Training Boost for CFA Volunteers
An online learning tools package to improve the availability and delivery of training for Victoria 's Country Fire Authority (CFA) firefighters has been launched.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Emergency Services, Peter Ryan said the newly developed training materials are part of the CFA's commitment to improving training and educational opportunities for both its career and volunteer members.
"The CFA comprises approximately 1,500 career firefighters and more than 59,000 volunteers and it's vital to ensure all members regularly update knowledge and skills to ensure Victoria has the best possible emergency service agency," Mr Ryan said.
The new online tools include:
- Skills Maintenance Drills – scenario-based drills to assist planning and training
- WebTRAIN – an online portal for skills maintenance training
- online training material – learning modules focusing on relevant skills and specialist roles
- emergency services off-road driving DVD – practical advice on dealing with a range of routine hazards often encountered while driving in adverse conditions.
Mr Ryan said the work of CFA volunteers and career firefighters are fundamental to protecting Victoria from the threat of bushfires and ensuring the safety of people and property.
The new resource is a great initiative that will help overcome barriers such as distance and isolation, and ensure all members have access to up-to-date, consistent information and training resources.
As the Victorian Government works with the CFA and Volunteer Fire Members Victoria to achieve greater recognition for the CFA volunteers, the new online tool will provide greater uniformity in training and better engagement of volunteers.
CFA is currently running its recruitment campaign to attract paid career firefighters for 2013. Successful candidates will be supporting the volunteer firefighters and work closely with local communities.
