White Ribbon Day

White Ribbon Day (25 November) is the international day for the elimination of violence against women and is an opportunity for all Australians, in particular men, to join together and swear “never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women”.

To take part in the campaign to stop violence against women, Australians are encouraged to wear a white ribbon as a symbol of this oath.

White Ribbon Day acknowledges that men have a critical role to play in ending violence against women and shaping the attitudes and behaviours of children and other men, including peers, colleagues and friends.

Through a combination of awareness campaigns, community events and initiatives with schools, universities, workplaces and sporting codes, the White Ribbon initiative works to change attitudes and behaviours which lead to violence against women.

As part of this year’s White Ribbon Day, the Department of Justice is helping to raise awareness about the issue of violence against women, by hosting a number of staff events across various metropolitan and regional locations.

Find out what public events are happening in your area, or to be involved in the campaign, visit the White Ribbon website.

If you, or someone you know is experiencing violence and need help, there are support services available in every state, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
