Consumer Affairs Victoria
Consumer Affairs Victoria is the Victorian Government's consumer affairs regulator, and a business unit of the Department of Justice. Its vision is 'informed and responsible consumers and traders'.
Consumer Affairs Victoria provides free information and advice so that:
- shoppers, renters and home owners know their rights and can avoid rip-offs
- businesses know the rules, and know they must follow them
- everyone can get a fair deal.
To help Victorians be responsible and informed, Consumer Affairs Victoria:
- advises and educates consumers, tenants, businesses and landlords on their rights, responsibilities and changes to the law
- registers and licenses businesses and occupations
- enforces and ensures compliance with consumer laws
- conciliates disputes between consumers and businesses, and tenants and landlords
- reviews and advises Government on consumer legislation and industry codes.
Scope
Consumer Affairs Victoria provides advice and assistance on renting and accommodation, estate agents, building, shopping and trading.
It also licenses or registers estate agents, introduction agents, motor car traders, sex workers, travel agents, second-hand dealers and pawnbrokers.
Consumer Affairs Victoria’s goals are:
- empowering consumers
- creating a competitive, fair and safe trading environment
- protecting vulnerable and disadvantaged consumers
- building its organisational capability.
