Action on Graffiti
Graffiti vandalism is a highly visual problem that has associated financial costs, concerned with its prevention and removal, and social costs as it affects the visual amenity of communities and influences perceptions of public safety.
The Graffiti Prevention Act 2007 is concerned with graffiti that is publicly visible and marked on property without the owner’s permission.
Graffiti is defined in the Act as to “…write, draw, mark, scratch or otherwise deface property by any means so that the defacement is not readily removable by wiping with a dry cloth”.
The factors that lead to and help address graffiti are multi-faceted and each community has specific issues that will influence how it best responds to graffiti vandalism.
