Consumer Protection
Victoria’s economy is modern and complex. To make things clearer, Victoria has a consumer protection framework setting out the rights and responsibilities of businesses and consumers.
In Victoria, consumer protection is administered by Consumer Affairs Victoria, a business unit of the Department of Justice.
Victoria was the first Australian jurisdiction to introduce a consumer protection Act (in 1964).
More recently, the state took a lead role in creating Australia’s first national consumer law, the Australian Consumer Law (ACL), which came in to effect on 1 January 2011.
The ACL provides clearer requirements for businesses and protections for consumers regardless of where they are in Australia.
