Juries

Trial by jury is a vital element of the Victorian legal system. It allows members of the public to directly participate in the administration of justice. The Office of the Juries Commissioner manages Victoria’s jury system.

Juries are used in civil and criminal trials in the Supreme and County Courts of Victoria. In a criminal trial, the jury must decide beyond reasonable doubt whether the accused is guilty of the offence with which they have been charged. In a civil trial, the jury must determine liability in a dispute between two or more parties on the balance of probabilities.

For more information on the jury process and jury duty, visit the Courts and Tribunals website.
