Community Impacts of Electronic Gaming Machine Gambling (Victoria and Western Australia)

This report compares the impacts of electronic gaming machine (EGM) gambling within the contrasting gambling environments of selected communities in Victoria and Western Australia.

The study was commissioned by the Gambling Research Panel (GRP) and released in December 2005. It compares the community impact of EGM gambling on four regions in Victoria (two metropolitan areas and two regional areas) and similar regions in Western Australia (where there are no EGMs outside the Burswood Casino).

The researchers undertook interviews, focus groups and surveys with community leaders in business, local government officials, residents and other stakeholders.

The study examines the difference between the gambling environments and the impact of these differences. The report compares:

  • gambling industries and expenditure
  • key features of different gambling environments
  • employment in the gaming sector and other industry sectors
  • community attitudes and awareness
  • incidence of problem gambling and use of financial counseling
  • gambling and health issues
  • gambling and crime
  • broader community impacts and services.

The report is divided into two parts. The first part of the report details the methodology and results. The second part of the report provides a profile of the Victorian and Western Australian regions included in the study.
