Victorian Gambling Research Arrangements
The Office of Gaming and Racing in the Department of Justice administers the Victorian Government’s gambling research program.
Research Governance
The Responsible Gambling Ministerial Advisory Council (RGMAC) advises the Minister on the priorities for the research program. The RGMAC comprises individuals with expertise from a range of community, local government, academia, industry and problem gambling services backgrounds.
An Independent Peer Review Panel (IPRP), comprising eminent gambling researchers from a broad range of social, medical and psychological research disciplines, also supports the research program. The IPRP provides independent expert advice to the RGMAC, the Department, and the Minister on research scoping, methodology and feasibility.
Victorian Research Agenda
The Victorian Research Agenda identifies the Victorian Government’s priorities for research in gambling and problem gambling. The agenda is developed in conjunction with the RGMAC and informed by comment from the IPRP. An updated research agenda was approved by the Minister for Gaming in 2011 and includes the following themes:
- sociology and gambling
- natural recovery
- product preferences and styles of play
- cultural differences in gambling
- mental health and gambling
- measurement and trials.
Grants for Gambling Research
Independent research is administered through the Grants for Gambling Research program. The grants program aims to re-invigorate applied gambling research by encouraging participation and input from a range of disciplines. There have been three rounds of grants to date.
Gambling Research Australia
The Office of Gaming and Racing provides secretariat support for Gambling Research Australia (GRA). The GRA is a partnership between the Commonwealth, State and Territory Governments to initiate and manage a national gambling research program.
