Sheriff enforcement powers

Sheriff’s officers have the authority to enact a range of sanctions when enforcing a warrant issued by a Victorian court.

This page provides a basic overview of these sanctions. Further information is available at Fines Victoria (External link)

If you have an outstanding warrant, sheriff’s officers may apply one or more of the following:

A wheel clamp can be placed on your vehicle anywhere, anytime. Sheriff’s officers are not required to give you prior notice.

Number plate removal (External link)

If this sanction is applied:

  • Your vehicle's number plate will be removed
  • Your registration will be suspended by Fines Victoria
  • You will not be able to drive your vehicle or sell the vehicle as your registration is suspended.

Sheriff’s officers can seize and sell your property to the value of the outstanding debt.
