What is Personal Information?
Personal information is defined as 'information or an opinion, whether true or not, that is recorded in any form about an individual whose identity is apparent, or can reasonably be obtained.'
Information is collected to ensure that:
- a person is lawfully in custody or properly supervised in the community
- security is maintained in Victoria’s prisons
- appropriate programs and services are provided to prisoners and offenders.
All reasonable steps are taken to ensure that personal information held by Corrections Victoria about a prisoner or offender is accurate, complete, and securely stored. This applies to personal information in both hard copy and electronic form.
A prisoner, offender, or prison visitor who believes that any personal information about them which is held by Corrections Victoria is inaccurate, incomplete or out of date may request for it to be corrected.
A prisoner or offender wanting to access or correct their personal information should first consult their case worker as the matter may be readily resolved at a local level.
