Prison Management
The Department of Justice is responsible for prison management in Victoria through Corrections Victoria.
Corrections Victoria is responsible for all prisoners in Victoria in both publicly and privately-managed prisons. It administers the contracts of the two private prison providers.
Corrections Victoria is responsible for achieving the appropriate balance between a high level of community safety and the humane treatment of prisoners. Corrections Victoria focuses on strategies to rehabilitate prisoners in custody and tackles the underlying causes of crime to reduce re-offending.
Corrections Victoria sets, monitors and reviews standards in both public and private prisons, undertakes business planning, and initiates and manages correctional infrastructure programs.
An independent business unit of the Department of Justice - the Office of Correctional Services Review - reports independently to the Secretary to the Department of Justice on the effectiveness of Corrections Victoria's management of the Victorian prison system.
