Hepatitis C Virus Among Inmates in Victorian Correctional Facilities

The Hepatitis C Virus Among Inmates in Victorian Correctional Facilities study was conducted by the Macfarlane Burnet Institute for Medical Research and Public Health and the Blood Borne Virus Consortium with support from the Office of the Correctional Services Commissioner and the Corrections Health Board.

This report looked at the percentage of hepatitis C virus antibody positive prisoners found in a randomly selected group of 630 Victorian prisoners.

Additionally, the report determined the infection transmission risk factors both inside and outside of prisons. The report found that 57 per cent of those prisoners tested had evidence of hepatitis C infection (66 per cent in women and 55 per cent in men).
