Victoria is well prepared to respond to fire emergencies. Our specialist personnel and equipment is in a constant state of preparedness, capable of responding to both home fires and bushfires, on private and public land.
Fire emergencies
Victoria has three fire services: Country Fire Authority (CFA), the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) and the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE).
Metropolitan Melbourne
The MFB covers fire and other emergencies in Melbourne, with the exception of some outer suburbs where the CFA provides fire services.
Regional and country Victoria
CFA has more than 1200 brigades across the state, including the outer Melbourne suburbs of Frankston, Dandenong, Cranbourne, Melton and Werribee.
State forests and national parks
Fire prevention and control in these areas is covered by DSE.
Warnings and tips on fire safety
CFA, MFB, DSE, SAFETYvictoria and the Victorian Government website provide fire safety tips and emergency information.
Bushfires
The Victorian Bushfire Safety Policy Framework is designed to improve bushfire safety for all Victorians. The protection of life and the safety of individuals is paramount. This key principle underpins the framework and provides guidance and direction for the use and application, where relevant, of each of the bushfire safety options.
The State’s fire services and emergency management agencies will develop guidelines and procedures to give effect to the framework to support and enable its appropriate application across Victoria.
