Honorary Justices FAQs

Revised Appointment Process – Justices of the Peace and Bail Justices

Q: I have already completed an application, why do I have to complete another one?
A:

The revised appointment process has arisen out of the Justice of the Peace reforms, which includes the introduction of additional selection criteria and probity checks to ensure that all applicants maintain integrity of the role and office. The new application form includes the additional selection criteria and enables the Honorary Justice Office (HJO) to conduct the relevant probity checks.

Q: What information do I need to provide around criminal offences?
A:

You must disclose all criminal matters (pending or dismissed), including specific details relating to any offence to which you have been charged or found guilty of, the offence such as date, location, charge and outcome.

If an activity has resulted in you receiving an infringement notice, you are not required to disclose this information. However, if you are unsure, please include such details in your application form.

Q: Who should I use as my referees?
A:

Your three referees must have known you for a minimum of three years, should be individuals who can attest to your character and standing within the community and should be willing to act as referees for you. In addition, your referees should be of good character and high standing in your community. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have told your referees that you are disclosing their contact details to the HJO.

Relatives (either by birth or marriage) will not be accepted as referees by the HJO.

Q: Who can witness my declaration?
A:

Only current Victorian JPs can witness your declaration in your application for appointment. Current JPs can be located via the Find a Justice of the Peace link in ‘Related Pages’ or by calling 1300 365 567.

Q: What parts of the Consent to Check and Release National Police Record Application form do I need to complete?
A:

You need to complete sections B, C, F, G of the Consent to Check and Release National Police Record Application form.  The HJO will complete the remaining administrative sections (A, D & E) and will forward your form directly to Victoria Police for processing. The HJO will cover all covers associated with the processing of your NPRC.
