Indigenous Victorians
The Department of Justice has been working in partnership with the Victorian Koori community to improve justice outcomes. This includes:
- a commitment to delivering initiatives under the Victorian Aboriginal Justice Agreement (AJA)
- engaging the Koori community through consultation and close involvement of Elders, Respected Persons and key community representatives
- developing networks that improve justice-related programs and services, making them more effective and accessible to Koories
- building partnerships with government, industry and community organisations to develop and implement services and programs that provide education, counselling and employment opportunities to Koories at risk of entering the justice system
- identifying and developing programs and infrastructure to address the over-representation of Koories already within the justice system
- negotiating and mediating native title applications in Victoria between Traditional Owners and the State Government, and coordinating a combined government approach toward native title and related issues.
