About the Victorian Aboriginal Justice Agreement

The development of an agreed direction for delivering a culturally-responsive justice system for Koories, encapsulated in the Victorian Aboriginal Justice Agreement (AJA), evolved as part of a more extensive dialogue to address inequality on a national level.

The results of this dialogue, between government and community, is evidenced in the consecutive publication of several key documents giving context to the AJA, including:

1. The Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody- Final Report (1991)

2. The National Ministerial Summit into Indigenous Deaths in Custody (1997)

3. The Victorian Aboriginal Justice Agreement (Phase one) – AJA (2000)

4. The Victorian Implementation Review of the Recommendations from the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (2005)

5. The Victorian Government Response to the Victorian Implementation Review of the Recommendations from the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (2005)

6. The Victorian Aboriginal Justice Agreement (Phase two) - AJA2 (2006)
