Koori Justice - Spring 2011
After more than a decade of positive action, stories of success and achievement continue to flow from the work of the Victorian Government and the Koori community in partnership under the Victorian Aboriginal Justice Agreement (AJA).
The Spring 2011 issue of Koori Justice magazine introduces the Victorian Justice Ministers with the AJA initiatives falling under their respective portfolio responsibilities. In maintaining the momentum of the AJA, we look at the ways in which AJA initiatives tackles Koori over-representation at each stage of contact with the justice system and its challenges for the future. A centre page spread hosts an easy reference AJA timeline of achievement, presented year-by-year.
We pay tribute to the work of the people whose advocacy and resilience have, and continue to, pave the way to improving Koori justice outcomes, including the late William Cooper, whose achievement inspired the naming of a Justice Centre in Melbourne, and more recently, long-serving members of the Aboriginal Justice Forum, Dr Alf Bamblett, Linda Bamblett and Larry Kanoa. We also look at the crucial role that the Regional Aboriginal Justice Advisory Committee (RAJAC) network plays in providing a direct link between government and community, enabling the two to work in partnership to deliver the AJA.
Featured are crime prevention and community safety initiatives delivered by our AJA partners, including the community-based Local Justice Worker Program, Frontline grants program and the Baroona Youth Healing Place, as well as corrections-based Wulgunggo Ngalu Learning Place, Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer program for Victoria Police, and the Koori Courts.
Also in this issue is an update on recent community events and activities run through place-based partnership projects at Lake Tyers and Mildura that receive funding through AJA. We also take a look at the National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples and the release of a federal report on growing youth over-representation in the justice system.
