Lake Tyers Community Renewal Project

The Department of Justice Secretary chairs the Inter-departmental Committee (IDC) for the Lake Tyers Community Renewal Project, a partnership with the Lake Tyers community to improve safety, health, education and employment outcomes, governance and infrastructure within the Lake Tyers Aboriginal Trust.

The Lake Tyers Aboriginal community is located on a peninsula abutting into Lake Tyers in East Gippsland.

A number of priorities for Lake Tyers were identified in close consultation with Victoria Police and the Koori community, based on a long-term and holistic approach. These priorities were developed into strategic objectives which aim to:

  • increase pride and participation in the community
  • enhance housing and the physical environment
  • lift employment, learning and local economic activity
  • improve personal safety and reduce crime
  • promote health and well-being
  • increase access to services and government responsiveness.

The Lake Tyers IDC monitors progress on the project and comprises community and government (federal, state and local) representatives and is a ten-year project, which commenced in 2004. A project team is based at Lake Tyers to deliver programs on a day-to-day basis.

The combined government approach has greatly strengthened the quality of interaction with the community enabling meaningful engagement with the Lake Tyers community to determine the scope, direction and pace of the project.
