Local Aboriginal Justice Action Committee
Local Aboriginal Justice Action Committees (LAJACs) have been established to develop close relationships and build trust with local Koori communities experiencing poor justice outcomes.
The local nature of the committee encourages increased ownership, participation and accountability. The establishment of the LAJACs has enabled government and local Koori community members to work together to identify and develop place-based responses to justice-related issues.
The role and responsibilities of LAJACs are to:
- identify and address justice issues that contribute to poor outcomes for the local Koori community
- advocate, monitor and comment on Koori contact with the justice system at the local level
- promote justice related initiatives, including the Victorian Aboriginal Justice Agreement (AJA) to Koori communities and government agencies
- promote Koori participation in the design, development, implementation and evaluation of local justice initiatives
- participate in and provide advice to the Regional Aboriginal Justice Advisory Committee network
- develop, promote and participate in relevant and local cross agency and cross-sectoral forums and initiatives.
LAJACs are based in Mildura, Swan Hill, Robinvale, Bendigo, Wodonga, Horsham, Geelong, Glenelg, Heywood, Morwell and Bairnsdale.
