Youth justice is a division of the Department of Justice and Regulation that provides secure facilities and support for young people. Our staff seek to help young offenders understand the impact of their actions and address their underlying personal issues.
What you’ll be doing
Youth justice workers understand that crime is complex, and that successfully dealing with it demands action beyond simple punitive measures. In addition to maintaining secure facilities, we aim to help rehabilitate young offenders and provide them with the confidence and skills to become positive contributors to their communities. Guiding personal behaviour change is a massive task and means our staff have many responsibilities, including:
- maintaining a secure environment and conducting searches and security checks
- supporting young offenders in their personal development through individual casework
- encouraging young offenders to contact their families and act on referrals to services
- ensuring that a secure environment is maintained for the benefit of young offenders, staff and the community.
Where you’ll work
Youth justice currently operates three centres in Victoria. The Parkville Justice Precinct comprises two centres, which host young people of both genders aged between 10 and 18, and also house 18 to 21-year-old females who have been sentenced to a senior youth training centre order by an adult court. Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre is a regional facility for young men, with two separated sites, one accommodating 16 to 18 year olds, and the other 18 to 21-year-olds who are on remand or have been sentenced to a youth order.
A new youth justice facility has been confirmed for construction in Wyndham and will be completed in 2020.
What we’re looking for
No matter your specific role in a youth justice centre, there are certain qualities you should possess to ensure you thrive in the environment and can make a real difference. You’ll need to be:
- a clear, respectful communicator – You will be someone our young offenders trust and respect. You will be able to speak on their level
- non-judgemental – You will be working with young offenders from a wide variety of personal backgrounds
- resilient – There will be setbacks, but you will overcome them and continue to work with vigour and purpose
- a self-manager – Though you will be working within a team, you will still need to take accountability for your own workload
- a conflict manager – You will need to clearly and calmly respond to conflict situations and diffuse tensions
- keen to take the initiative – You will have to think on your feet constantly, using your education and knowledge of department policy to guide your day-to-day problem solving.
