Victims Register

If you are a victim of a violent crime, the Victims Register can provide you with information about an adult offender who is under sentence in Victoria for committing a crime against you.

What happens when I am on the Victim's Register?

If you are on the Victims Register you may be:

  • notified of the prisoner's sentence length and earliest possible release date from prison
  • given the opportunity to make a submission in writing to the Adult Parole Board about the prisoner's potential release on parole
  • given the opportunity to make a submission in writing to the courts or the Adult Parole Board when the offender is subject to a post-sentence detention order or supervision
  • notified when the prisoner is granted release on parole or placed on home detention, and informed of any special conditions on the parole order relevant to you
  • notified if the offender becomes subject to a supervision or detention order.

Written Submissions

The Victims Register will facilitate your written submission to the Adult Parole Board or, where applicable, the courts. Your submission informs the Adult Parole Board or the courts of any concerns you have about the prisoner being released on parole, or subject to a supervision order. You may also suggest any special conditions you would like placed on these orders.

Who can apply to be on the Victim's Register?

Generally, you are only entitled to be placed on the Victims Register if the offender is in prison as a result of the crime he or she committed against you. However, you also may apply to be on the Victims Register if you:

  • are or have been a domestic partner of the prisoner with a family violence intervention order in force against the prisoner
  • can demonstrate a documented history of family violence being committed against you by the prisoner
  • were a witness for the prosecution at the trial

Registration on the Victims Register is voluntary.
