Charges laid
This section explains what happens when charges are laid. It includes information about:
- types of offences and how they are dealt with
- the alternatives to court
- how charges are laid
- when and how bail is granted.
Or you can watch the video for an overview of charges laid.
As a victim, it is your right to be kept informed about the charges filed against the accused person. The police will either contact you by phone or mail to tell you if the accused person has been charged and what the charges are.
Not all investigations result in charges being laid. When this happens, the police will explain why. For example, there may have been a lack of evidence or the accused person cannot be found.
