Summons and subpoenas
As a victim, you may be called upon as a witness in court. All witnesses are sent a notice to attend court which is called a summons (in the Magistrates' Court) or a subpoena (in the County and Supreme Courts).
This notice tells you when and where the case is going to be held. If you receive a summons or subpoena, you must attend court.
If you do not receive a summons or subpoena, you are not obliged to attend the court case. However, if you do decide to attend, you should notify the police investigator of your intention to attend court.
Tip: Make sure you have a copy of your police statement to take to court. If you do not have a copy, contact the police investigator.
