Child Safety

The Working with Children (WWC) Check is one of a range of government initiatives designed to help keep Victoria’s children safe. Other initiatives include:

  • Department of Justice
The Department of Justice is responsible for administering laws that protect children from convicted sex offenders, including indefinite sentencing laws, the Sex Offender Register and extended supervision orders.
  • Department of Human Services – Office for Children
The Office for Children’s work is focused on the health, safety, development, learning and wellbeing of children, young people and families in Victoria, including child protection.
  • Office of the Child Safety Commissioner
The role of the Child Safety Commissioner is to provide a strong independent voice for children, promote their safety and well being and to provide advice to the Minister for Children.

There are also a number of non-government child safety organisations, including Child Wise, a not-for-profit organisation that works to prevent and reduce the sexual abuse and exploitation of children in Australia and overseas. This includes the Choose with Care program, which aims to minimise the risk of child abuse occurring within voluntary and professional organisations working with children.
