Identified and Designated Positions

An Identified Positions Policy and a Designated Positions Policy are in place within Justice, developed as an initiative of the Victorian Aboriginal Justice Agreement (AJA).

Identified and Designated Positions within Justice require specific skills, knowledge and understanding of the Victorian Koori community.  These positions provide an important tool for recruitment of Indigenous employees with the appropriate skills and knowledge to enable more effective development of policy and delivery of services to Indigenous people.

The occupant of an Identified Position is required to have an understanding of the issues affecting the Indigenous community and the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Indigenous communities.  Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are encouraged to apply for these positions.

Identified Positions include jobs such as Indigenous Community Corrections Officers.

A Designated Position is one that can only be occupied by an Indigenous Australian. All the duties under a Designated Position involve the development and delivery of policies, programs and services that impact on Indigenous people and involves interaction with Indigenous communities or their representatives.  An exemption under the Equal Opportunity Act (1995) has to be sought and approved for the filling of a Designated Position.

Designated Positions include jobs such as Koori Court Officers and Aboriginal Well-Being Officers located within the prisons.
