What is a Sheriff's Officer?
Sheriff's Officers are officers of the Supreme Court who are responsible for actioning warrants, and orders issued by all Victorian Courts. Sheriff's Officers enforce sanctions against people who do not comply with court orders. Sanctions can include the seizure and sale of assets, licence or vehicle registration suspension or arrest.
Sheriff's Officers also action civil warrants on behalf of a plaintiff against a defendant when a court order has been made. Sheriff's Officers have legislative authority to demand payment of outstanding debts. If payment is not made or payment arrangements entered into after a certain period are not made, they can seize property or arrest members of the public.
Sheriff's Officers need to have exceptional negotiation and problem-solving skills. They are required to exercise tact, discretion and sound judgement in the actioning of warrants. Sheriff's Officers need to take into account cultural and religious diversity in their everyday work.
Salary and benefits
The role of a Sheriff's Officer is a uniformed position. The starting salary of a Trainee Sheriff's Officer is $38,235 per annum plus superannuation. After three months and successful completion of training and deemed competent in actioning initial criminal warrants, this salary will increase to $44,443 per annum plus superannuation. Sheriff's Officers work Monday to Friday within the hours of 7:00am – 9:30pm in shifts patterns. In addition to their base salary, Metropolitan Officers receive a six per cent commuted allowance, regional Officers receive 10 per cent commuted allowance. Sheriff's Officers are itinerant workers and their car is their office.
