CAV Ensures Show Safety is 'in the Bag!'
Consumer Affairs Victoria has taken the danger, but certainly not the fun, out of this year’s Royal Melbourne Show showbags. Product safety inspectors tested the toys and novelties in 342 different showbags and removed any dangerous products.
“Kids love showbags and showbags are an integral part of the Royal Melbourne Show. Victorian families can feel assured that the toys and games they’re buying at the Show don’t pose unnecessary risks to children,” Consumer Affairs Minister Tony Robinson said.
The product safety team found only three toys that breeched safety standards for containing unacceptable levels of lead.
Consumer Affairs Victoria’s Trade Measurement inspectors also tested food products in showbags to ensure consumers get what they pay for.
Of the 1724 food products tested, only six failed to meet trade measurement standards for being of short measure or for not having a statement of measurement attached.
Follow up inspections will take place to ensure showbag suppliers continue to comply with mandatory safety standards and ban orders on unsafe products, and that confectionery is labelled, and weighted, correctly.
Mr Robinson thanked the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria for once again inviting CAV to inspect the showbags, saying the Society took a responsible attitude to product safety.
The Royal Melbourne Show will run from September 12 – 27.
