Have Your Say on Justices of the Peace
Deputy Premier and Attorney-General Rob Hulls is inviting Victorians to have their say on the future of Justices of the Peace (JP).
Mr Hulls released a consultation paper as part of a Victorian Government review of JPs and the role they play in Victoria’s justice system.
“This review is a result of an independent advisory panel’s recommendations on the appointment of Justices of the Peace,” Mr Hulls said.
The consultation aims to get Victorians’ views on the wider functions of JPs and whether there is a need to reform the role.
“Given that their function has changed markedly over the years, it is timely to rethink how JPs are appointed, the training they receive, their terms of service and whether the role is even required today,” Mr Hulls said.
The closing date for responses is Friday 30 October 2009.
