More Awareness and Less Crime

Eight legal community and educational projects will share in $2.4 million in grants as part of the State Government’s Public Purpose Fund.

The funding, administered by the Legal Services Board, supports young Victorians by encouraging them to turn their backs on crime.

Deputy Premier and Attorney-General Rob Hulls said the eight funding recipients are all doing invaluable work to improve access to justice.

“I congratulate the recipients and look forward to these projects helping to improve awareness of legal rights and responsibilities, reduce crime, promote legal research and education, and identify possible areas for law reform,” Mr Hulls said.

One of the recipients in this round of funding is the Youth, Community and Law Program in Sunshine.

The Program will receive more than $220,000 to fund its work in re-engaging participants in education, employment, health, housing and recreation.

Other services offered by the program include counselling, behaviour support and drug and alcohol services.

“On referral from the Magistrates’ Court, each young person on the program is assigned to a case worker at the Visy Cares Hub, who helps them overcome the barriers they face to participating fully in the community,” Mr Hulls said.

Applications for the next round of project grants worth up to $50,000 close on Friday 11 September 2009.

Further grants information is available on the Legal Services Board website.
