National Emergency Warning System Tender Released
The State Government has released a selective tender for a National Emergency Warning System to ensure the system is in place ahead of the next bushfire season.
“Our government is committed to taking necessary actions to protect Victorians for the upcoming bushfire season,” Premier John Brumby said.
The Council of Australian Governments agreed on 12 May 2009 for Victoria to lead the process of rolling out the new system.
“With the first milestone in the procurement process complete, we are on track to ensure this critical system is in place in October,” he said.
The selective tender targeted major telecommunications providers Optus and Telstra who collectively own 98 per cent of fixed-line infrastructure.
“Organisations with relevant technology who believe they can contribute to the system should consider approaching the two major telecommunications providers,” Mr Brumby said
The decision to proceed with the selective tender was based on independent advice commissioned by the Commonwealth Attorney General and after consulting with all jurisdictions.
A request for information for the second part of the project, which utilises location-based technology, will also be released publicly in the next few weeks and interested parties should consider responding to that as well.
