New Design Guidelines for Public Safety

The State Government has unveiled new design guidelines to help reduce violence and antisocial behaviour in and around licensed venues.

Consumer Affairs Minister Tony Robinson said the innovative Design Guidelines for Licensed Premises recognise that a venue’s layout can influence the way people behave.

“Fit-outs reducing congestion and over-crowding inside venues and in public areas outside will minimise the potential for conflict between patrons, passers-by and staff and maximise staff and crowd controllers’ abilities to monitor activity and respond immediately to any issues,” Mr Robinson said.

“Improving key design features such as lighting, climate control and queuing arrangements can result in very real improvements in safety.”

The guidelines, which apply to new and existing venues, outline approaches for dealing with potential problem areas including;

  • Entries, exits, queuing
  • Footpaths, laneways, car parks
  • Dance floors, bar areas, circulation space
  • Outdoor drinking, dining and smoking areas
  • Lighting, climate and noise.
