SES Volunteers Respond to Wild Winds
More than 700 State emergency service volunteers from 94 units sprang into action yesterday to assist Victorians affected by the heavy rainfall and wild winds of up to 127 kilometres an hour.
Emergency Services Minister Bob Cameron this morning praised the hard work of the volunteers, who responded to more than 1500 calls within a 24 hour period.
“All Victorians can be thankful that our volunteer emergency services personnel respond so well when and where they are needed – and this is a testament to their abilities,” Mr Cameron said.
“The good work continues today as the SES continue helping Victorians households cleanup the damage caused by the extreme weather we experience.”
Mr Cameron also extended thanks to the families and supporters of volunteers who enable them to undertake this critical work in times of need.
Across the metropolitan area the busiest VICSES units were:
- Lilydale, 335
- Knox, 205
- Eltham, 92
- Nunawading, 85
Ballarat was the busiest regional VICSES unit with 70 calls.
Wild weather is expected to continue today and the SES is urging Victorians in coastal and elevated areas to clear their houses and properties of loose and dangerous items.
