Stepping in the Right Direction

Victorians of all walks of life will take to the streets this weekend in celebration of multiculturalism.

Although the ‘Walk for Harmony’ is over a relatively short distance, the event this Sunday 12 July will go a long way to reaffirming Victoria as a safe and supportive environment in which all cultures, religions and backgrounds are accepted and embraced.

Premier John Brumby will be leading the charge from Carlton Gardens to Federation Square and he urges people to join him.

Mr Brumby acknowledges that in light of recent events this walk is of great importance as it gives Victorians a chance to silence any doubts that may have arisen about the community’s commitment to multiculturalism and he has broadcast his strong support of this walk.

“The Walk for Harmony will send a clear message to the world that Victoria welcomes people of all backgrounds and faiths, that we value the contributions that people from around the world have made to our state and that we as a community strongly reject any forms of racism of violence,” he said.

“I am very proud of Victoria’s cultural diversity. I believe that the overwhelming majority of Victorians recognise the importance of diversity to our state.”

After the walk has taken place participants will be treated to entertainment, including a half hour musical concert, and other activities.
