Tightest Security for Toughest Criminals
Victoria’s toughest criminals will be housed in a new maximum security unit at Port Phillip Prison.
Minister for Corrections Bob Cameron said the new Salamander facility has the capacity for more than 800 serious offenders to be detained at the Laverton site.
“The unit is designed to help stop prisoners re-offending and a key feature of its design is a series of areas for treatment and education programs,” Mr Cameron said.
The new facility, opened earlier this week, boasts 59-beds, an observation cell, and specific rooms for treatment, programs and interviews.
“There will also be additional medical services and an expansion of on-site industry at the prison, where prisoners work and learn job skills to help contribute to society upon their eventual release.”
The new facility was also designed with enviro-friendly features such as:
- solar hot water heating
- energy efficient light fittings
- timed shower
- double-glazed windows to increase insulation levels.
