Trams, Trains and Buses a Safer Way to Travel
Safety on Victoria’s public transport network has improved with the latest statistics showing a drop in overall crime.
The reduction in crime is despite an increased number of people using trams, trains and buses.
Newly released statistics show crime on the public transport network has dropped 10.5 per cent over the past year.
Figures indicate a 14 per cent reduction in assaults and 12.7 per cent drop in crimes against property.
Police Minister Bob Cameron attributes this reduction to the ongoing partnership between the State Government, Victoria Police and public transport operators.
“Victoria has a public transport system that is safer than ever before,” Mr Cameron said.
Statistics indicate the public transport network is markedly safer now than it was at the start of the millennium, with crime dropping 43.1 per cent since 2000-01.
The figures show that for every one million trips on our public transport system, there are less than three assaults, three cases of property damage and less than one robbery.
