Wheels In Motion for New Police Divisional Vans
There will be an increased police presence on Victorian roads with the addition of 40 new divisional vans.
Victoria Police’s current fleet of 160 vans will be gradually phased out to make way for 200 new high-tech, purpose-built vehicles.
“Our Government continues to invest in strengthening Victoria’s police force so that the growing number of police officers we’re adding to the force can be best equipped to continue their great work and make the community safer,” Police Minister Bob Cameron said.
“These new generation divisional vans will not only put more police vehicles on the streets, but they will increase the safety and capabilities of police officers using them.”
The new vans will feature:
- Increased storage space for operational equipment
- Video monitoring and recording of detainees
- Two-way communication between front cabin and rear pod
- Video camera that automatically switches between pod monitoring and reverse camera when reverse gear is engaged
- Dampeners on pod doors to prevent detainees kicking doors open and injuring members.
Victorian’s will start seeing these new high-tech vans on our roads from November, the full fleet will be operational by the end of 2010.
