Work Together, Protect Victoria

The fire season is almost here and Victorians are being urged to work together to ensure the state is as fire-safe and fire-ready as possible.

“The task for us all is to work together to prepare our state for a fire season that’s shaping up to be every bit as bad or worse than the season we’ve just experienced,” Premier John Brumby said.

“I urge all Victorians, no matter where you live or what your fire experience has been, to get fire ready – identify your risk, prepare your fire plan, clean up your properties and get involved in your local fire preparation activities.”

Mr Brumby said the government and its agencies are working quickly to implement significant new measures and improvements to get communities across Victoria fire ready.

These measures include:

  • A national six-tiered fire danger rating system
  • A national telephony-based warning system
  • A household self-assessment tool for residents
  • A behind the scenes website featuring standardised information alerts and emergency warnings for dissemination on Country Fire Authority (CFA) and Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) websites
  • Revised roadblock protocols
  • Procedures to ensure appointment of the most experienced and qualified Incident Controller for each fire
  • Township Protection Plans in 52 high-risk towns.
