Infringements System Oversight Unit
The Infringements System Oversight Unit (ISOU) was created to support the Attorney-General’s responsibilities in connection with the Infringements Act 2006. Infringements are minor offences, such as littering and traffic or parking offences, which incur penalties, usually fines.
One of the unit’s roles is to support the government initiative to set up common principles and standards across the infringements system. It monitors the system across more than 130 state and local government agencies (including hospitals and universities) that can issue infringements.
The unit also has a role in:
- assisting to develop and implement overarching legislation for consistent infringement law and procedures
- applying Cabinet-approved policy about which offences are best dealt with as infringements and how agencies should apply that policy when a new offence is to be treated as an infringement.
